Representatives of countries from the Americas will examine the problem of electronic networks being used for criminal activity, during a meeting November 19-20, at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, DC.
Howard Cox, Assistant Deputy Chief of the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, will open the Fifth Meeting of the Group of Governmental Experts on Cyber-Crime, which was established by the Ministers of Justice or Ministers or Attorneys Generals of the Americas (REMJA) to address the global issue. Mr. Cox is also the present Chair of the Group.
The intergovernmental experts will report on the drafting or enacting of cyber-crime legislation in their countries, the creation or enlargement of cyber-crime prosecution or investigation units; as well as progress on the process of acceding or adhering to the Council of Europe Convention on Cyber-crime, among other issues.
The conference will also analyze aspects of cooperation between the private sector and government authorities, as well as international cooperation and assistance on cyber-crime.
