Presidents of Costa Rica, Spain and Guatemala, OAS Secretary General and UNHCR High Commissioner for Refugees at Event in Solidarity with Displaced Persons and Refugees in Central America and Mexico
June 8, 2021
The Presidents of Costa Rica, Spain and Guatemala, as well as the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, will participate on June 10 in an event in solidarity with forcibly displaced persons and the communities that host them in Central America and Mexico.
The event is organized and promoted by the Government of Spain, which has the pro tempore Presidency of the Platform of Support for MIRPS, and Costa Rica hosts it. The objective is to obtain donations and contributions to continue the work being done by the Regional Integrated Framework for Protection and Solutions (MIRPS), of which Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Panama are currently members.
The MIRPS was created in 2017 with a humanitarian and development focus, addressing the needs of a growing number of Central Americans fleeing violence and persecution. Under this framework, each of these countries has committed to national action plans and has outlined strategic alliances with local governments, multilateral agencies, friendly countries, civil society and the private sector to address the needs of displaced persons and the communities that host them. The MIRPS has a technical secretariat made up of UNHCR and the OAS, through the Department of Social Inclusion in the Secretariat for Access to Rights and Equity.
