OAS TO STUDY ROLE THAT CULTURE PLAYS IN ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE REGION

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, and the President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Luis Alberto Moreno, will open on Monday a seminar that will assist Member State governments to enhance their knowledge on the impact of culture on economic and social development in the Americas.
The workshop “Culture as an Engine of Economic Growth and Social Inclusion in the Americas,” being held at OAS headquarters with the collaboration from the IDB and the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), will bring together on October 1-2, representatives from the Ministries of Culture, Finance and Planning. This meeting will facilitate a focused dialogue among policymakers on these issues, along with representatives of international institutions, and will help identify ways to enhance support for cultural development initiatives through international cooperation.
Presentations will be heard on recent studies that demonstrate the direct link between cultural projects and their positive impact on economic growth and the generation of employment and social wellbeing at a global, regional and subregional level. In addition, experiences will be shared from Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, and the Caribbean associated with cultural tourism and the creation of sustainable communities; fiscal incentives for cultural industry and its impact on national economies; and the opportunities and challenges of a creative economy.
Also, international organizations such as the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and the Andres Bello Agreement; multilateral institutions such as the IDB and the World Bank, and national groups will present successful studies and experiences related to the main issue of the workshop.
The workshop is being organized on the eve of the III Regular Meeting of the Inter-American Committee on Culture (CIC), a body that brings together the members of the each of the Ministries of Culture of the 34 Member States.
