SPECIAL PERMANENT COUNCIL SESSION WEDNESDAY TO EXPLORE
PROMOTION OF WOMEN’S HUMAN RIGHTS AND GENDER EQUALITY

  April 20, 2004

During a meeting of the OAS Permanent Council on Wednesday, April 21, 2004, beginning at 9:00 a.m., member state representatives will examine progress and challenges experienced by member states in formulating and implementing policies and strategies to incorporate gender perspective.

The Permanent Council is convening the session in conjunction with the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM), the Unit for the Promotion of Democracy (UPD) and the Summit Process Secretariat. Participants include El Salvador’s Foreign Minister Eugenia Brizuela de Ávila; Ecuador’s Foreign Trade Minister Ivonne Baki; Chile’s Defense Minister Michelle Bachelet; and Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Planning and Development, Camilla Robinson Regis.

The session Hill be inaugurated by Permanent Council Chairman Miguel Ruiz-Cabañas, Mexico’s Ambassador; CIM Vice President and Associate Director Status of Women Canada Florence Ievers; and El Salvador’s Ambassador to the OAS Margarita Escobar.
