STRUGGLE AGAINST ANTI HUMAN-TRAFFICKING: TOPIC TO BE DISCUSSED BY THE OAS INTER-AMERICAN COMMISSION OF WOMEN

  March 14, 2005

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) of the Organization of American States (OAS) has convened a landmark anti-trafficking in persons meeting of government officials from the Caribbean on March 14-16 in Washington, DC. Some 75 officials and experts have gathered at the OAS to assess the progress and plan the follow-up of a research and training project that began in 2004 and focused on human trafficking in the Bahamas, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, the Netherlands Antilles, Saint Lucia and Suriname.

This is the first time that representatives from across the region have gathered to specifically address the question of trafficking in persons as well as to develop regional cooperation action to prevent and combat trafficking.

The regional meeting is being held in concert with a regional counter-trafficking project currently being implemented by IOM and Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) in the Bahamas, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, the Netherlands Antilles, Saint Lucia and Suriname.

In a program to be transmitted on Tuesday, March 15 2005, via radio, television and Internet a panel of experts will examine the issues being discussed during this conference. Among those participating in the panel discussion will be Carmen Lomellin, Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM), Phillip Linderman, OAS Anti-Trafficking in Persons Coordinator and Ashley Garrett, Project Manager - Trafficking in Persons of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Irene Klinger, Director of the OAS Department of Communications and External Relations will moderate the panel discussion.
