OAS MARKS 60th ANNIVERSARY OF ITS CHARTER

The 60th anniversary of the Organization of American States’ (OAS) Charter, which was signed in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1948, will be commemorated at on Wednesday, April 30, at OAS headquarters. Celebration of the OAS milestone features a series of events including conferences, a book launch and a concert.

OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza and Permanent Council Chairman, Barbados’ Ambassador Michael King will deliver opening remarks for the conferences, which begin at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Secretary General of the Ibero-American Organization, Enrique Iglesias, will then deliver a lecture entitled “The OAS Charter: Then and Now.”

Others scheduled to speak at the events include former Barbados Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister Dame Billie Miller, who will speak about “The Caribbean: A Rising Association in the Hemisphere.” Ambassador to the OAS and Former President of Panama Aristides Royo will speak on “Challenges for Inter.-American Relations: Facing the Future,” with OAS Assistant Secretary General Albert R. Ramdin giving the closing remarks.

Following that, Secretary General Insulza will launch a book entitled “The House of the Americas” at 5:45 p.m. And finally, at 6:30 p.m., the Inter-American Camerata performs in concert at the Hall of the Americas, with Conductor Mariano Vales.
