JOINT ITU/CITEL FORUM ON “ENABLING AN ICT BUSINESS
ENVIRONMENT IN THE AMERICAS REGION”

  April 18, 2008

The Inter-American Telecommunication Commission (CITEL), an Organization of American States specialized agency, is teaming up with the International Telecommunications Union to host a forum at OAS headquarters on Monday, April 21, on “Enabling an ICT business environment in the Americas Region.”

OAS Assistant Secretary General Albert Ramdin will address the opening session, along with the Director of the ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau, Sami Al Basheer Al Morshid, and the Chair of the CITEL Permanent Executive Committee, Pedro Pablo Quirós Cortés.

The one-day Forum begins at 8:45 a.m., and precedes the April 22-25 Eleventh Meeting of CITEL’s Permanent Consultative Committee II: Radiocommunication including Broadcasting. Details are online at http://www.citel.oas.org/sp/ccp2-ProxReunion.asp.

Seeking to strengthen dialogue and private-public sector exchange of experiences on the improvement of mutual cooperation for the telecommunication/ICT development in the Americas, the Forum is also aimed at developing a policy and regulatory environment that promotes industry/information communication technology (ICT) development and investment, with a special focus on ICT expansion in rural and remote areas.

Drawing on a variety of international and private sector telecommunications experts, the Forum will also feature roundtable discussions exploring such topics as ICT development in the Americas; strategies to stimulate ICT development; and enabling investment and new opportunities.

The Forum will be webcast live, on the OAS website at: www.oas.org.
