OAS and MPI to Present Report on Innovative Responses for Countries to Address the Flow of Venezuelan Migrants in Latin America

  January 28, 2019

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) will present, next Wednesday, January 30, the policy brief: "Creativity amid Crisis: Legal Pathways for Venezuelan Migrants in Latin America," which examines the innovative responses that the countries of the region can implement in the face of the Venezuelan migration crisis.

The report details the settlement process of Venezuelan migrants; the measures that Latin American governments have used to regularize their legal status; and the efforts to integrate newcomers into their new communities of residence. It also asserts that although Venezuelan migration has represented a challenge for the region, it has also become an opportunity for many countries to obtain access to qualified human capital and to correct demographic imbalances.

The event will feature presentations by:

• Betilde Muñoz-Pogossian, Director of the OAS Department of Social Inclusion
• Diego Chaves, former United Nations Liaison Officer and Senior Monitor, International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Colombia
• Francisco Quintana, Program Director for the Andean, North America, and Caribbean Region, Center for Justice and International Law
• Jessica Bolter, Research Assistant at the Migration Policy Institute
• Miryam Hazan, Migration Specialist at the OAS
• Andrew Selee, President of the Migration Policy Institute (Moderator)

The event will be broadcast via webcast here.
