The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of El Salvador today signed an agreement to advance the formation, objectives and competencies of the International Commission against Impunity in El Salvador (CICIES).
The agreement, which follows up on the Letter of Intent signed on September 6 and the Agreement signed on September 20, focuses on defining the objectives of the Commission, its structure and members, its powers and obligations, the obligations of the Government and the lines of action of the Commission, among other aspects.
OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro said the OAS is ready to support El Salvador to fight the scourge of corruption. “With CICIES we will support El Salvador and our member states to combat this scourge. We will work hand in hand with national institutions whose functions, competencies and responsibilities are fighting against corruption and impunity,” he added.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, Alexandra Hill, said the initiative is "another step in the fight against corruption in El Salvador." "President Nayib Bukele mandated that corruption and impunity should not be tolerated in our country," she said.
The OAS General Secretariat and the government of El Salvador have been working on the establishment of CICIES since September 2019. The commission already has headquarters and offices in San Salvador and a team of people that will increase in the coming months.
