The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) today commemorated the birth, 236 years ago, of Simón Bolívar, hero of the independence of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru and Venezuela.

The Chair of the Permanent Council and Ambassador of Grenada, Yolande Smith, highlighted the admiration of the Caribbean peoples for Bolivar and recalled that he was himself from the Caribbean, as he was born in Caracas and died in Santa Marta, two cities with Caribbean coastlines. "Bolivar is universally recognized as a statesman, thinker and military genius," added Ambassador Smith.

For his part, the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, stressed that the Liberator maintained his unwavering faith in achieving freedom for the inhabitants of a good part of the countries of South America, despite the infinite difficulties he had to overcome. "Not surprisingly, Bolivar said: "I love the freedom of America more than my own glory, and to achieve it I have not avoided sacrifices," Almagro added.

The meeting in homage to Bolivar was held in the Hall that bears his name, the customary venue for meeting of the Permanent Council in Washington, DC.
