The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Superior Tribunal of Electoral Justice (TSJE) of Paraguay today signed an agreement for the provision of technical cooperation in electoral matters during a ceremony held at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.

The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, explained that the agreement will allow the Organization to provide technical support to the TSJE in the reforms it is carrying out. "The OAS and the Tribunal have a long history of collaboration, both in terms of electoral observation and cooperation," said the Secretary General.

For his part, the President of the TSJE, Jaime Bestard, affirmed that his country is making an important transformation of its electoral system and valued the support of the Organization. "The electoral system is to a large extent the support of a country's institutional solidity, and the OAS has developed a key role through its technical cooperation missions and its electoral observation missions in the hemisphere," said the President of the TSJE.

The OAS has deployed 14 Electoral Observation Missions in Paraguay since 1991.
