The Organization of American States (OAS) and El Salvador today signed an agreement for the deployment of an Electoral Observation Mission to the February 3 presidential elections.

The Permanent Representative of El Salvador, Carlos Alberto Calles, highlighted the contribution of the Observation Missions to the strengthening of democracy in the country. “The participation of the OAS Electoral Observation Mission is very valuable for El Salvador for the learning process they bring, because we are improving the electoral process election by election,” said Ambassador Calles.

For his part, the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, highlighted that the Missions are independent and autonomous. “This agreement guarantees the facilities to fulfill the activities of the Mission, including free access to all instances of the election, as well as fluid contact with the relevant organizations and actors in the electoral process," said Secretary General Almagro.

The Mission will be led by the Uruguayan Juan Pablo Corlazzoli and will include 80 observers.
