The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) today analyzed the struggles, achievements and challenges facing women's equality and rights in the region, and highlighted the work that the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) has done to highlight the discrimination and violence experienced by women.

The Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica, Epsy Campbell Barr, said that "femicide is the most dramatic expression of violence and discrimination against women; recognizing and combating this phenomenon is still an unresolved issue in the region, where, according to ECLAC, during 2017, 2554 women were victims of this scourge."

For her part, the Minister of Women and Minorities of Peru, and President of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) of the OAS,Ana María Mendieta, recalled that in order to confront violence against women in the region, "progress must be made in public policies, research, and coordination, but above all, in the allocation of resources to implement policies focused on equality."

At the closing of the session, Secretary General Luis Almagro said that "the gender equality agenda is today a central part of the good in the world. In the context of the celebration of both, the ninetieth anniversary of the CIM and the seventieth anniversary of the OAS, we reaffirm the Organization's commitment to real and effective equality between women and men and what it implies in all spheres of life - personal, political, private and public."

During the session, the CIM presented the "Atlas of Women's Struggles," which includes the figures and legislation available in the States of the region to address the prevention and eradication of cultural practices and discrimination.
