OAS Secretary General Meets with Small and Medium Business Representatives from Central America

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with a delegation of organizations representing micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) from Central America and the Dominican Republic who are visiting Washington DC to study the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) model of the United States to be developed in their countries.

During the meeting Secretary General Insulza talked about the work that the hemispheric organization is doing to support this sector in its Member States. The head of the OAS said that, in order for the hemisphere to achieve real development, “we need our economies to grow stronger together,” a goal for which the role of the MSMEs is crucial.

For her part, the Chair of the Regional Center for MSME Promotion (CENPROMYPE) and Minister of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Authority of Panama, Giselle Burillo, expressed her interest in working together.

The visit by the representatives of Belize, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras y Panama is part of the process of adapting the SBDC model that includes certification programs for the training of the personnel in the centers; the submission and selection of proposals by the organizations in charge of hosting of the centers; policy design; adaptation of legal instruments and definition of sources of financing, among other activities.
