El Salvador, Sixth Country to Ratify the Inter-American Convention on the Protection of the Human Rights of Older Persons

El Salvador today became the sixth country to deposit the instrument of ratification of the Inter-American Convention on the Protection of the Human Rights of Older Persons at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, DC.
The Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the OAS, Carlos Alberto Calles, highlighted the interest of his government in the social welfare of the elderly. "El Salvador is pleased to become a state party to the first binding instrument on the subject at the Inter-American and global levels, which opens the opportunity to strengthen public policies, based on a comprehensive approach to protecting the human rights of older persons," said the Central American diplomat.
For his part, the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, said that about 11 percent of the Salvadoran population is over 60 years old, and recalled that the delegation of El Salvador to the OAS was an active participant in the process that led to the Convention. "The Convention responds to specific needs of adults, including dignity in old age, personal freedom, and privacy," added the Secretary General.
El Salvador is the sixth country to deposit the instrument of ratification of the Convention - which was adopted in 2015 - after having been ratified by Uruguay, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina.
