The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the President of Panama, Ricardo Martinelli, within the framework of his visit to that country, where he participated in the opening ceremony of the Virtual Educa meeting taking place in the Panamanian capital until June 22.

During the meeting, the two discussed recent events in the hemisphere, the results of the OAS General Assembly in Cochabamba, Bolivia, and regional efforts aimed at strengthening the Inter-American Human Rights System. They also spoke about mandates received by the organization at the Summit of the Americas held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, in April, in particular the report the organization has been asked to develop regarding different strategies applied in combating drug abuse and trafficking.

Secretary General Insulza and President Martinelli also exchanged points of view regarding the cooperation between the hemispheric institution and the Panamanian government towards the Seventh Summit of the Americas which, as agreed at the OAS Assembly in Cochabamba, will be hosted by the Central American country.

The head of the OAS also met with the Panamanian Foreign Minister, Roberto Henríquez.
