Secretary General Meets with Canadian Foreign Minister

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with Canada’s Minister of State of Foreign Affairs for the Americas, Diane Ablonczy, who will be taking part in the forty-second regular session of the OAS General Assembly to open tomorrow, June 3, in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

During the meeting both reaffirmed their commitment to working on economic integration issues and to following up on the mandates of the Sixth Summit of the Americas, including strengthening security and counterdrug efforts in the Hemisphere. Secretary General Insulza and Minister Ablonczy also discussed the activities of the working group to strengthen the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) as well as other matters concerning the General Assembly.

Also at the meeting were the Permanent Representative of Canada to the OAS, Ambassador Allan Culham; the Chief of Staff of the Secretary General, Ambassador Hugo de Zela; and the Secretary for External Relations of the OAS, Ambassador Alfonso Quiñónez.
