The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today received the Secretary of Health of Mexico, Salomón Chertorivski, who is in Washington, DC for a work visit.

During the meeting, Secretary General Insulza and Minister Chertorivski discussed the importance of the conclusions that emerged from the High Level Hemispheric Meeting against Transnational Organized Crime held in March in Mexico City. They agreed to deepen the cooperation between the OAS and Mexico in developing strategies of prevention, as well as strategies to combat the demand and consumption of drugs.

In this context, the two talked about the mandate given by the Heads of State and Government at the recent Summit of the Americas for the hemispheric organization to begin a review and study process of the national and hemispheric policies developed so far in the fight against drugs.

Also present at the meeting, held in the office of Secretary General, were Mikel Arriola Peñalosa, Commissioner for the Federal Commission for the Protection from Sanitary Risks of Mexico, Ambassador Adam Blackwell, the Secretary for Multidimensional Security of the OAS and the Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) of the OAS, Paul Simons.
