OAS Secretary General Meets with Suriname’s Foreign Affairs Minister

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Suriname, Winston G. Lackin, at the ministry’s headquarters.

Secretary General Insulza and Minister Lackin talked about current affairs in the hemisphere, with special emphasis on Haiti, the Summit of the Americas, the upcoming OAS General Assembly, the security challenges in the region, and the meeting of the Ministers of Education of the continent, to be held from tomorrow to Friday in Paramaribo.

Minister Lackin told Secretary General Insulza about the recent visit to Haiti of the Office of Heads of Government of CARICOM, currently chaired by Suriname. Also, he confirmed that the Surinamese President, Desiré Bouterse, will attend the Summit of the Americas, to be held April 14 and 15 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.

On the ministerial meeting on education, the head of the OAS and the Surinamese official agreed on highlighting the importance of the issue to the region, in the building of strong foundations for a more prosperous and safe society.
