The Organization of American States (OAS) will send an Electoral Observation Mission to the February 4 referendum and popular consultation in Ecuador, according to the agreement signed today by the Ecuadoran government and the General Secretariat of the Organization.

The Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the OAS, José Valencia, highlighted that this will be the nineteenth mission of the OAS in the country, which in his view shows "the perseverance and consolidation of democracy in Ecuador over several decades of elections and the united efforts of Ecuadoran society, and also the commitment of the OAS, providing its support to the states for the strengthening of their democratic institutions."

For his part, the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro revealed that the Chief of Mission will be Leonardo Valdés Zurita, former President of the National Electoral Institute of Mexico, and that the Mission will begin its deployment on January 26. "We appreciate the trust of Ecuador and we wish you success in this exercise of direct democracy that seeks to involve the sovereign in an active and committed way," he said.
