OAS Secretary General Meets with US Under Secretary for Political Affairs

Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary General José Miguel Insulza met today with United States Under Secretary for Political Affairs, William J. Burns, during the firty-first OAS General Assembly session, underway in El Salvador from June 5 to 7.

During their meeting, they both underscored the importance of public security for the region, noting as well that the member countries were very interested in implementing a joint security initiative during the General Assembly.

Secretary General Insulza and Ambassador Burns also discussed the return of Honduras to the OAS, which the US diplomat described as a reminder to the countries that applying the principles of the Democratic Charter works, and solves problems, too.

They also took the opportunity to discuss other issues on the regional agenda, including cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking as well as the next Summit of the Americas, scheduled for Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, from April 14 to 15, 2012.
