The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador, Sigfrido Reyes, on the occasion of the hemispheric body’s 41st General Assembly, to be held in this Central American nation on June 5 to 7.

During their meeting, the Speaker of the Salvadoran legislature and Secretary General Insulza spoke about the topics to be dealt with at the upcoming General Assembly and other issues on the regional agenda, including the recent readmission of Honduras to the OAS, the state of the prison system in the Hemisphere, institutional strengthening, and organized crime.

“For us as a country, it is very important politically for the General Assembly to be taking place here, and for it to be addressing the topic of citizen security is particularly encouraging,” said Speaker Reyes. He also spoke of the implications of Central America’s geographical location for organized crime and the importance of strengthened cooperation, meaning, he explained, not only legal and police cooperation, but also technical cooperation to deal with this scourge.

The Secretary General and the Speaker of the Assembly agreed to forge closer ties between El Salvador and the OAS, whereby the hemispheric body would provide technical support and channel resources with a view to the creation of a Legislative Training School to increase the professionalization of the Assembly’s administrative and political staff.

At the end of their conversation, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly presented the Secretary General with a written declaration commemorating the occasion and extending a welcome to the delegations attending the General Assembly, and he gave voice to his hope that this important event would yield positive results in the fight against organized crime and would invest the strengthening of judicial cooperation with increased confidence.
