The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), Ambassador Tibor Toth.

During the meeting, Ambassador Toth shared his wish with the head of the OAS for Latin America and the Caribbean in their entirety to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty as a symbolic show of the region’s commitment with peace and stability. He said only two active Member States of the Organization have yet to sign this international instrument.

For his part, Secretary General Insulza offered Ambassador Toth his support and that of the OAS Secretariat for Multidimensional Security in reaching this goal. The meeting also addressed other issues related to disarmament, nonproliferation of nuclear weapons, and citizen security, and explored possibilities for collaboration between the CTBTO, the OAS, and other regional and global organizations that work on this matter.
