The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today participated in a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act of the United States, an event organized by the environmental organization National Audubon Society and held at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC.

Secretary General Insulza emphasized the importance of a law that “has supported critical on-the-ground conservation and habitat restoration programs throughout the Americas, and has catalyzed conservation efforts and partnerships to protect birds.”

The head of the OAS recalled that “five of the top ten mega-biodiversity countries in the world are in the Americas,” and called on international collaboration for the protection of fauna in the region. “There is no one country that can stake a claim to any bird species and no one country can shoulder the responsibility for ensuring their survival,” he said. “Strong partnerships are needed that support sustainable resource use and environmental protection that reverse the decline of many of our migrating birds.”

Also at the event were William Shafroth, United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Fish, Wildlife and Parks, and David Yarnold, President and CEO of Audubon. The celebration received the special support of Hector E. Morales, Jr., former representative of the United States to the OAS.
