OAS Secretary General Meets with Managing Director for the Americas of the European External Action Service

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with the Managing Director for the Americas of the European External Action Service, Christian Leffler, at this office in Washington, DC.

During the meeting, the two discussed issues on the current hemispheric agenda, including the situation in Haiti, efforts to succeed in reinstating Honduras to the hemispheric body, and elections in Peru, Nicaragua, and Argentina. They also talked about issues addressed by the hemispheric organization in the political sphere, such as the strengthening of institutions and human resources in Bolivia, Paraguay, and El Salvador.

The European diplomat expressed to Secretary General Insulza the commitment of the EEAS to the OAS on these issues and the programs of the Organization. The European External Action Service is conducted by Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
