The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with the President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, in Brasilia, in what was the first meeting between the head of the OAS and the Brazilian leader. During the meeting, held in the Planalto Palace, the two authorities talked about the main issues in the region, among them the positive state of democracy in the continent, economic growth and, in this context, the decrease in the rates of poverty.

Secretary General Insulza thanked President Rousseff for the permanent cooperation of Brazil in the plans for assistance to Haiti, and the two analyzed some pending problems—the situation of former President Manuel Zelaya- to normalize the situation in Honduras and its reincorporation into the OAS. Also present at the meeting was the country’s Minister of Foreign Relations, Antonio de Aguiar Patriota. The central theme of the next OAS General Assembly, in El Salvador, “Citizen Security,” also was part of the conversations.
