Belize Presents Documentary on the History of its Popular Music at the OAS

The Permanent Representative of Belize to the Organization of American States (OAS), Néstor Méndez, today presented at the OAS Columbus Memorial Library the documentary “Punta Soul”, produced and directed by Nyasha Laing, who is of Belizean origin.

“Punta Soul” narrates the evolution of the Garifuna music, created by an afro-indigenous people that emigrated from the Caribbean Islands to Central America in the late 18th century, and describes how its rhythm influenced the cultural revival of the ethnic communities of Belize.

Also in attendance were the Permanent Representative of Costa Rica and President of the Group of Friends of the Columbus Memorial Library, Ambassador Enrique Castillo; the Permanent Representative of Uruguay, Ambassador Maria del Lujar Flores; and the Permanent Observer of France, Ambassador Pierre-Henri Guignard.
