The OAS today renewed its cooperation agreement with the White Helmets initiative of Argentina to strengthen the work of humanitarian assistance in the Americas.

Coordinated by the Argentine government, White Helmets is a body of volunteers that provides humanitarian assistance both inside and outside the country.

The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, highlighted the recent rescue efforts of the group in natural disasters in the Caribbean and North America. “The volunteer work of the Argentine White Helmets is an example we hope to replicate in the hemispheric initiative on natural disaster risk management and thus generate a new system of disaster prevention and primary care in the Americas,” said Almagro.

For his part, the President of the White Helmets, Alejandro Daneri, emphasized the commitment of the group to the OAS, and called on other member states to join the initiative. “Argentina will soon make a disbursement of this fund to have movement and decisions on the issue under the guidelines of the Secretary General, and we extend the invitation to other States parties to support this initiative and increase our deployment.”

The White Helmets and the OAS have worked together since 1995.
