The government of Spain will contribute 2.5 million Euros (nearly 2.7 million dollars) to the Organization of American States (OAS) during 2017 for programs on peace, democracy, human rights, security and development, according to an agreement signed today at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC.

The Senior Advisor for Strategy and Organizational Development of the OAS, Luis Porto, and the Permanent Observer of Spain to the OAS, Ambassador Jorge Hevia, signed the agreement, in a meeting in which the Chief of the Unit of Support of the General Direction for Cooperation with Latin America and the Caribbean of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AECID), Laura Oroz, participated via video conference.

The contribution of Spain will be directed specifically to support the Inter-American System of Human Rights, humanitarian demining in Colombia, confidence building measures in the Belize-Guatemala Adjacency Zone, the strengthening of systems of civil registry, citizen security, narcotics control and the OAS Missions for Electoral Observation.
