The Organization of American States (OAS) and the National Electoral Institute (INE) of Mexico today signed a cooperation agreement to promote debate and research on electoral issues.

Specifically, the agreement calls for both organizations to promote diverse activities such as the organization of fora and debates on elections, joint publications of specialized material, and the design of research projects to strengthen electoral participation and democratic culture.

The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, recalled that the OAS and the INE have had a relationship for several years in defense of the democratic institutions in the region, and that the new agreement aims to strengthen this objective. “During my administration I have had special interest in the importance of having impartial and autonomous electoral bodies. Our work as a General Secretariat in the strengthening of democracy has to go hand in hand with ever stronger institutions,” said Almagro.

For his part, the President of the INE, Lorenzo Córdova, said while promoting the adoption of better electoral practices is the main objective of this agreement, “promoting cultural change is a collective task that we cannot delay, given the current context of democracy in the Hemisphere.”
