The Organization of American States (OAS) will observe the referendum on the peace process between the government and the guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC) on October 2.

OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, received from the Ambassador of Colombia to the OAS, Andres Gonzalez, the invitation to observe the plebiscite. The Secretary General said, "We are happy to accept to accompany Colombia through an observation mission to observe an important and fundamental electoral process that would end 50 years of armed conflict."

Secretary General Almagro announced that in the coming days he will appoint the Head of Mission and define the number of members that will make up the team of observers to be deployed in Colombian territory.

For his part, the Permanent Representative of Colombia to the OAS, Andrés González, said to secretary general Almagro that his country made the invitation "for the confidence in the OAS and you" and added, "This historic event it must be surrounded by all the guarantees of full international scrutiny, sufficient transparency and the right of every citizen to freely exercise their sacred right to express themselves at the ballot box."
