The new Permanent Observer of Italy to the Organization of American States (OAS), Marilina Amellin, today presented her credentials to the OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, at the institution’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Amellin highlighted the many ties between Italy and the OAS. “Italy strongly supports multilateralism and deeply shares the values and objectives of the OAS, in particular strengthening of democracy, defense of human rights and the rule of law, international stability, peace and security", she said.

She further recalled the recent contributions of her country to both the OAS Electoral Observation Mission in Guatemala and the project on reparation and reintegration of anti-personnel landmines victims in Colombia, carried out by the OAS in the framework of the Mission to Support the Peace Process in that country (MAPP-OEA).

For his part, Secretary General Luis Almagro underscored the important role permanent observers play in supporting the work of the Organization, and he warmly welcomed Ambassador Amellin to the hemispheric forum.
