The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today received the President of the Arab Human Rights Committee, Hadi Ali M. Alyami, who was accompanied by other Committee members and paid a visit to hemispheric Organization’s headquarters within the framework of the meeting this week of the 154 Period of Sessions of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).

At the meeting, Secretary General Insulza explained the functioning, history and characteristics of the Inter-American System and emphasized the autonomous nature of the decisions of the Commission, its relevance in the Hemisphere and its relationship with member states. "In the OAS we have great respect for the independence of the Commission and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, we do not give opinions about their decisions, and this is a factor that has strengthened them. These institutions belong to the countries," he said.

For his part, the President of the Arab Committee explained that the entity he represents was recently created, and therefore has a long way to go. "We hope to generate more frequent exchanges with the IACHR and the OAS and to learn from their experiences, cooperate and have a more fluid dialogue," he said.

At the meeting both authorities discussed issues related to the challenges in the defense of human rights in Arab countries and those of the Americas, the recent election of the next OAS Secretary General, the avenues for cooperation and exchange between the two entities, the International and Regional Conventions on human rights and their implementation and effectiveness, and the importance of broadening the scope of transitional justice applied in specific cases in several countries in both regions.
