OAS Secretary General Met with Leaders of Latin American Civil Society Organizations in the United States

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with leaders of various latino civil organizations in the United States, in his offices in the headquarters of the Organization in Washington, DC.

During the meeting, which was attended by Hector Sanchez, Executive Director of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA); Amy Hinojosa, President and CEO of MANA; Abel Nuñez, CEO of the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN); and Sergio de la Peña, from the US-Mexican Chamber of Commerce, the representatives expressed their interest in closer ties with the hemispheric organization from their position in US civil society and to work together with the OAS on topics of common interest, such as the status of Latin women working in the United States and migration.

For his part, Secretary General Insulza recognized the contribution of the Latino community in the North American country and the work done by civil organizations as a link between countries and societies in which immigrants settle, and offered to assist in the construction of a working agenda on issues in common.

The meeting was also attended by the Secretary for External Relations of the OAS, Ambassador Alfonso Quiñonez and the Director of the Department of International Affairs, Jane Thery.
