The 33rd edition of the Model General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) aimed at high school students was inaugurated today at the headquarters of the Organization in Washington, DC.

The principal objective of the activity is to promote democratic values among the youth of the hemisphere through a simulation of the General Assembly of the Organization in which the students represent the 34 Member States. The model seeks to familiarize students, teachers, and academic institutions in the Americas with the mission and work of the institution.

In the opening ceremony, Yadira Soto, adviser to the Assistant Secretary General of the OAS, Ambassador Albert Ramdin, encouraged students to actively participate in the event, which will give them "the opportunity to learn about important issues of the current inter-American agenda."

In this edition of the Model, which will take place until December 5th, 20 high schools from the United States and four from Colombia are taking part. At the opening ceremony, OAS officials recognized Midland Senior High School, which has continuously participated in this event since 1989.
