Secretary General Insulza Meets with the President of the United Nations General Assembly

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with the President of the United Nations General Assembly Sam Kahamba Kutesa, in the framework of the visit the leader of the hemispheric Organization made to the UN to introduce the content and results of the recent OAS Assembly of Guatemala focused on the issue of drugs.

In the meeting with Kutesa who represents Uganda at the main deliberative organ of the UN, Secretary General Insulza, together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala Carlos Morales officially delivered the resolution adopted by the XLVI Special General Assembly entitled "Reflections and Guidelines to Formulate and Follow Up on Comprehensive Policies to Address the World Drug Problem in the Americas" and the Declaration of Antigua, Guatemala. As part of the meeting, the authorities also talked about the process of debate that led to the adoption of the documents, the leadership role of the hemisphere in the subject and the different perspectives of how to deal with this scourge.

Prior to meeting with the leader of the UN General Assembly, Secretary General Insulza and Foreign Minister Morales met with the Permanent Representatives of the member countries of the Group of Latin America and the Caribbean in the framework of the UN (GRULAC) who also received the documents from the OAS high-level meetings and received a brief overview of the report "the Drug Problem in the Americas," prepared by the OAS.

The meeting also served to review the steps to be taken with a view to the Special Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on the World Drug Problem to be held in 2016.
