The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Junta Federal de Justicia de Paz de Argentina (JU.FE.PAZ) today signed a framework cooperation agreement to carry out academic, research and cooperation activities to strengthen and improve the judicial capabilities of the justices of the peace (jueces de paz) of the South American country.
After the ceremony held at the headquarters of the hemispheric Organization in Washington, DC, the President of JU.FE.PAZ, Guillermo José Vega, said that “justices of the peace are the guarantee of access to justice in every corner of the territory” and highlighted the “vocation and closeness” that justices maintain with citizens. "We serve the victims hand in hand and face to face, and we have the competent authority to assist - among other issues - with issues of gender violence and domestic violence," added Vega, who recognized the importance of the signature that not only benefits to the entity he leads, “but above all the people, who are the recipients of all this effort.”
The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, applauded the completion of the agreement because, he said, “promoting the training and training of justices of the peace represents an unavoidable exercise to build solid and competent institutions that respond to the needs of the communities in which they operate in an agile, effective, and efficient manner.” Secretary General Almagro also highlighted that the role played by these justice professionals “is one of the noblest forms of practicing law that exist. They help in maintaining order, harmony and respect for the rule of law at the local level,” he added.
The justice of the peace is a judicial official with specific powers in each location that facilitates access to justice in the most remote places. This cooperation initiative is the product of joint work between the Secretariat of Legal Affairs of the OAS and the Permanent Mission of the Argentine Republic accredited to the hemispheric Organization, which will help the more than 1.900 members that make up the Junta Federal de Justicia de Paz de Argentina.
