The Observer Mission of Spain to the Organization of American States (OAS) today donated to the Columbus Memorial Library of the institution the manuscript "Codex Martínez Compañón," commissioned by Bishop Jaime Martínez Compañón during his residence in Trujillo, Peru, between 1782 and 1785.

Ambassador Allan Culham, Permanent Representative of Canada to the OAS and Chairman of the Group of Friends of the Columbus Library, underscored the historical and artistic value of this magnificent collection, which is made up of nine volumes and two appendices and contains 1,411 watercolor illustrations and 20 musical scores documenting life in colonial times.

Ambassador Jorge Hevia, Permanent Observer of Spain to the OAS, presented the manuscript and explained that it offers extensive information on the architecture, flora, fauna, customs, clothing, and items of the daily life in the diocese. He also described how the work has been preserved, disseminated and reproduced, which demonstrates the connection between countries on both sides of the Atlantic.

According to the Handbook of Latin American Studies, the compendium is a “remarkable and unique encyclopedic visual corpus of far reaching importance for many disciplines beyond art and architectural history.”
