The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met for the first time with the new President of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, Humberto Sierra Porto, at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.

It was the first meeting between Secretary General Insulza and Judge Sierra Porto in his capacity as President of the institution based in Costa Rica, a position he assumed in January 2014 and will carry out during the biennium 2014-2015. Sierra Porto succeeded Judge Diego Garcia Sayán, who led the Court between 2010 and 2013.

Secretary General Insulza and the President of the Inter-American Court discussed the process of strengthening the inter-American system of human rights that the OAS Permanent Council implemented between 2011 and 2013, and, in particular, the objective of promoting the universalization of the system. They also evaluated the impact of the Court’s visits to various countries in the region, which they described as positive.

During the meeting, Secretary General Insulza was accompanied by the OAS Secretary for Legal Affairs, Jean Michel Arrighi. President Sierra Porto attended the meeting, along with the Vice President of the Court, Robert F. Caldas.
