The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today met with representatives of the Inter-American Association of Public Defenders (AIDEF), with whom he discussed the importance of promoting the creation, autonomy, and the independence of public defenders in various countries of the region.
Participating in the meeting were the Director of the National Office of the Public Defender of the Dominican Republic and General Coordinator of AIDEF, Laura Hernández; the Defender General of Argentina and Secretary General of AIDEF, Stella Martínez; the National Defender of Chile, Georgy Schbert; as well as Catalina Sadá, Head of International Relations at the Public Defenders’ Office of Chile.
At the meeting, Secretary General Insulza stressed the need to expand the access to justice that citizens in the Americas have, with particular emphasis on the provision of resources to increase opportunities to access the inter-American human rights system, a topic considered key to the work of Public Defenders’ Offices. Participants at the meeting agreed on the importance of strengthening cooperation between the OAS and the AIDEF and of working to improve the image of public defenders, as well as their relationship with the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
AIDEF’s representatives presented to the OAS leader details on the creation of the Regional Guide for the Public Defense and the Integral Protection of Persons Deprived of Liberty, which aims to enhance, strengthen and extend existing good practices, as well as to improve the services provided by Public Defenders’ Offices in order to safeguard the rights of persons deprived of liberty.
