The Dominican Republic will host the Fifth Meeting of Ministers and High Authorities of Social Development (V REMDES) to be held in Santo Domingo on November 17 and 18, according to an agreement signed today at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, D.C.
The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, recalled that one of the main lessons left by the COVID-19 pandemic is that the region has much to do in terms of social and development policies. "The ministerial dialogue is a key platform to give tangible form to the commitments made by OAS member states in various instruments, devising possible national and regional solutions aimed at improving the welfare of the most vulnerable people. We thank the Dominican Republic for hosting the meeting," added Secretary General Almagro.
For his part, the Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to the OAS, Josué Fiallo, noted that for the first time since the end of the pandemic, the Ministers of Social Development of the Americas will meet to "discuss current problems in depth, define priorities and articulate concrete actions and strategies to recover and advance social development in the region." Ambassador Fiallo added that the meeting will approve the II Plan of Action for Social Development and the Declaration of Santo Domingo.
The central theme of the meeting will be "Strengthening Hemispheric Cooperation towards Resilient Reconstruction and Sustainable Social Development in the Americas." The meeting in Santo Domingo will be the fifth Ministerial Meeting on Social Development. The first took place in Reñaca, Chile in 2008; the second in Cali, Colombia in 2010; the third in Asuncion, Paraguay in 2016; and the fourth in Guatemala City, Guatemala in 2019.
