The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Superior Auditing Entity and the Legislative Branch of the State of Querétaro in Mexico today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote transparency, accountability and digital transformation, during a ceremony held at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.
The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, highlighted the significance that two key institutions of the State of Querétaro agreed to work with the OAS Secretary General, "in promoting various actions and cooperation initiatives in order to strengthen their plans to strengthen the democratic governance of the State." "It is also very commendable that special attention is given in this memorandum to digital transformation, a mandatory agenda to promote increasingly demanding sectors that require economic capacity, skills and knowledge, to address a sustainable universalization, inclusion and digital literacy," added the Secretary General.
The Auditor General of the State of Querétaro, Enrique De Echávarri, thanked Secretary General Almagro "for trusting in this initiative" and added that the agreement will help local authorities to establish strategies to fight corruption and to "achieve our goals in terms of access to information, transparency and accountability".
Meanwhile, the President of the Board of Directors of the LX Legislature of the State of Queretaro, Antonio Zapata Guerrero, recalled the measures approved by the legislature he heads to combat corruption and improve the conduct of public officials. "For us it is important to work to generate a culture of honesty that permeates throughout society, and this agreement points in that direction," he added.
The agreement establishes a general framework of cooperation for the support of the OAS General Secretariat to both institutions in their efforts for innovation, modernization and institutional strengthening and provides for courses and seminars to update and train legislators, advisors and officials of the State of Querétaro.
