The new Permanent Observer of Italy to the Organization of American States (OAS), Simone Turchetta, presented his credentials today to the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, in a ceremony held at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, D.C.
Ambassador Tuchetta highlighted the common values and "the way of understanding and experiencing life" that his country shares with the countries of the Western Hemisphere. "The Organization of American States is every day more and more the privileged partner of Italian actions in the Americas," added the Italian diplomat.
For his part, Secretary General Almagro recalled that several tens of millions of people in the region are of Italian origin and that, at different moments in history, many citizens of the Americas have migrated to Italy. "Italy is a country that has deep historical ties with the Western Hemisphere. In these times of common challenges and shared principles, I am very pleased to welcome Ambassador Turchetta," said the OAS Secretary General.
Italy has been a Permanent Observer to the OAS since 1972, and is one of the oldest observer countries to the hemispheric institution, together with Spain and France.
