"Together against inequality and discrimination" will be the theme of the 52nd General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) to be held October 5-7 in Lima, Peru's Minister of Foreign Affairs, César Landa, announced today before the Permanent Council of the hemispheric institution.
Foreign Minister Landa explained that "growing inequality is an unavoidable concern at this juncture." For this reason, "Peru has considered it appropriate to propose this theme for the General Assembly in the conviction that it is urgent to act to contain and reverse deepening social gaps, which have increased due to the pandemic and other factors,” added the head of Peruvian diplomacy.
For his part, the OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, said that the General Assembly in Lima will serve to "prioritize what is needed from the common effort, beyond difficulties and differences." "The challenge presented by Peru to fight together against inequality and discrimination is more relevant than ever," added Secretary General Almagro.
The General Assembly is the main annual meeting of the OAS. This will be the third time Peru has hosted the Assembly.
