The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) agreed today to work on joint projects in favor of a green agenda and environmental protection in the Americas.
The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, emphasized that "the framework agreement we are signing today is another step in strengthening the fruitful relations between the OAS and CAF, an institution with which we share common values such as the defense of democracy, human rights and sustainable development". He also stressed that environmental protection is "the first point of joint work to promote the sustainable use of the biodiversity and reaffirm the commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and invest in a low-carbon global economy, with special emphasis on countries and regions most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, such as the Caribbean.”
For his part, CAF President, Sergio Díaz Granados, highlighted the commitment of the institution he heads to "become the Green Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean". In this regard, he announced that CAF will make an investment of 25 billion dollars by 2026 to meet "environmental and climate commitments of our shareholder countries, strengthening resilience to climate change, but at the same time taking advantage of the enormous opportunity to work in favor of a positive biodiversity agenda that favors the most vulnerable regions, in which we will prioritize the Caribbean".
The OAS and CAF signed their first collaboration agreement in 1995.
