The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today inaugurated the Model OAS General Assembly (MOAS) 2013 for universities at the headquarters of the hemispheric organization in Washington, DC.

“The MOAS program seeks to promote democratic values among the young people of the Americas, and to disseminate the mission and work of the OAS,” said Secretary General Insulza before some 300 university students from across the region. The MOAS meeting takes place until March 30 under the auspices of the OAS and the Institute for Diplomatic Dialogue of the Americas.

The MOAS is a program of the OAS created to promote democratic values among young people from the hemisphere, through a simulation of the General Assembly of the OAS. This exercise familiarizes students, professors and academic institutions with the work of the OAS and with its Member States, as well as the role of the organization as the principal political forum of the hemisphere. In the MOAS, students represent the diplomats of the Member States of the OAS and debate resolutions on the current issues of the Inter-American agenda.
