The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Masonic Confederation today signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen their joint work in favor of freedom, equality and democracy in the hemisphere.

The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, emphasized that "of our independence heroes, many were outstanding Masons who with their ideas inspired the nascent nations of the Americas and honor Freemasonry in the region. Their legacy, their vision of the future and their integrationist character have been essential pillars for the functioning of our Organization."

For his part, Geraldo De Souza Macedo, Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Masonic Confederation, said that one of the main objectives of Freemasonry is "to work for the happiness of humanity," but that happiness, he said, cannot be completed while there are "peoples at war, illiterate people subjected to slave labor, hunger, absence of freedoms, citizens living under the yoke of dictators and without minimum access to education." And these objectives, he affirmed, converge with those of the OAS.
