The Organization of American States (OAS) and Peru's San Martin de Porres University agreed today to relaunch the Lecture Series of the Americas within the framework of the School of Governance of the hemispheric institution.

OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro recalled that the Lecture Series was created in 2004 by the Permanent Council to enrich the hemispheric debate on the main issues of the Inter-American agenda. "The Lecture Series is in line with several articles of the Inter-American Democratic Charter that establish that the OAS will continue to develop programs and activities aimed at promoting and strengthening democratic culture in the hemisphere," said Secretary General Almagro.

For his part, the Rector of San Martin de Porres University, José Antonio Chang, emphasized that the main objective of the Lecture Series is to strengthen democracy. "We can contribute from the academy through conferences and lectures that allow the dissemination of experiences in our countries -and beyond our countries- on democracy, which, although not perfect, can be constantly improved."

Since its creation, more than 60 lectures have been held, thanks to the support of the San Martin de Porres University and other contributions from some OAS Permanent Observer countries.
