The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, stressed in a speech to the New York Bar Association the importance that the Inter-American System of Human Rights adapt to changing times in the region, and emphasized that allowing it to be weakened would be “completely unthinkable.”

During his presentation, the leader of the hemispheric organization emphasized that the key to strengthening the system is dialogue with the Member States of the OAS.

“I believe that through the active and effective promotion of dialogue with our countries we can reduce the gap between the statutory recognition of human rights, which is a reality, and their effective implementation, which we have to achieve,” said the Secretary General, who is in New York in the framework of the 67th General Assembly of the United Nations.
