The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of Peru today signed an agreement for the deployment of an Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) to the April 11 general elections in the South American country.

The Permanent Representative of Peru to the OAS, Hugo de Zela, highlighted the work of the OAS missions in favor of the democratic institutions of the hemisphere. “The role played by these missions shows that the OAS is in a position to contribute to the institutional framework of our countries and demonstrates the concrete benefit that Inter-American mechanisms can have in favor of the consolidation of democracy in the región," said the Peruvian diplomat.

For his part, the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, recalled that the goal of the OAS missions is to observe what happens in the electoral process and to formulate recommendations. “The objective of every Electoral Observation Mission is to contribute to improving electoral processes in the hemisphere. We have this election ahead of us and we express our highest commitment to continue working together and cooperating in order to strengthen Peruvian democracy,” said the OAS Secretary General.

The Mission will be the twenty-first that the OAS has deployed in the country.
